Step 1: Remove Loose Debris

Before applying any cleaner, vacuum the rubber floor with a soft brush head to remove dust, dirt, and loose particles. A vacuum works better than a broom because it can pull debris out of the small pores in the rubber.

  • Adjust the vacuum brush height so it doesn’t scratch or mark the surface.
  • A light to medium setting is usually enough to lift debris without causing damage.

Step 2: Wash the Floor

Rubber flooring is best cleaned with a mop, but not all mop types work well:

  • Avoid cotton string mops or low-quality sponge mops, as they can shed fibers.
  • Use a microfiber mop head for the best results.

Mix a pH-neutral cleaner (such as Zep Concentrated Neutral pH Floor Cleaner) with warm water, following the product’s dilution instructions. Mop the floor with a damp—not soaking wet—mop.

⚠️ If using a foamy cleaner (like dish soap), rinse the floor afterward with clean water. Skipping this step can leave behind a film that makes the floor look dull and attracts more dirt.

Step 3: Dry the Floor

Let the floor air dry completely. To speed up the process:

  • Open windows for better airflow.
  • Use a box fan to circulate air.
  • Wipe up excess water with a dry microfiber cloth or mop.

1/2" (12mm) Rubber Gym Tiles — 18” x 18” | Maximum Protection, Precisely Placed

Maximum impact protection doesn’t have to mean maximum coverage commitment. Our 1/2" (12mm) rubber gym tiles in 18” x 18” let you place our thickest rubber exactly where heavy training demands it — under a squat rack, across a deadlift zone, in front of a barbell station — without tiling your entire floor at the top price point. Buy what you need, position it precisely, expand tile by tile.

At 12mm thick, this is our maximum protection tile. Made in the USA from recycled rubber, backed by a 5-year warranty, available in 4 colors.

Why 1/2" Thickness Matters Where the Bar Hits the Floor

  • Maximum impact absorption in the tile lineup — 12mm of recycled rubber is designed to absorb the energy of barbell drops, protecting both your subfloor and the bar
  • Protects concrete slabs from cracking under repeated high-impact contact from dropped barbells and heavy loaded movement
  • Best anti-fatigue performance — standing on 12mm rubber through long deadlift or squat sessions is noticeably more comfortable than thinner options
  • 5-year industry-leading warranty
  • Made in the USA from recycled tires — built for the punishment of serious strength training
  • Slip-resistant surface stays firm under max-effort movement and heavy loaded equipment

When to Choose 18” Over 24” at Maximum Thickness

The 18” format gives you surgical precision in where maximum protection goes:

  • Target specific high-impact zones — your existing floor might be 3/8" tile or rolls throughout; add 1/2" tiles only in the barbell drop zone and deadlift area without re-tiling the whole room
  • Smaller powerlifting footprints — a dedicated deadlift zone doesn’t need to be 4’ x 8’; tile exactly the area the bar occupies at 2.38 sqft per tile
  • Irregular equipment layouts — rack stations, deadlift areas, and Olympic zones don’t always fall on 24” grid lines; the 18” tile fills those shapes with less cutting waste
  • Upgrade an existing floor — have a lighter-tiled gym but need maximum protection under a new rack? Tile just that station with 1/2" tiles and butt them up to the existing floor
  • Budget-conscious maximum protection — get 12mm rubber exactly where it matters at 2.38 sqft increments rather than committing to 4 sqft per tile throughout

Where 1/2" x 18” x 18” Tiles Are the Right Call

  • Powerlifting station zones — the barbell zone under and in front of a squat rack where the bar contacts the floor on deadlifts and missed lifts
  • Dedicated deadlift areas where the bar hits down every rep — tile to exactly the footprint of the working area
  • Olympic lifting platform outer panels — tile the rubber drop zones of a DIY lifting platform in 1/2" tiles with a wood center section for standing
  • CrossFit barbell zones in facilities where barbells are regularly dropped from hip height or overhead
  • Bumper plate storage areas where plates are regularly dropped or rolled across the floor
  • Commercial strength areas that need maximum-durability flooring under the heaviest-use stations
  • Horse stable flooring in high-traffic stall areas and wash bays where superior joint protection is needed; 18” tiles handle irregular stall dimensions cleanly

How the Interlocking System Works

Puzzle-style interlocking edges on all four sides. No adhesive, tools, or underlayment required. Press tiles together and they hold under heavy training loads. The 1/2" tile weighs approximately 6.86 lbs per tile in Black (2.88 lbs/sqft × 2.38 sqft) — substantial enough to self-anchor well under equipment. The system is fully reversible: any tile lifts out for cleaning, replacement, or reconfiguration without disturbing adjacent tiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 18” tiles for a powerlifting station?

A rack base plus the full barbell zone in front covers roughly 4’ x 6’ (24 sqft = about 10 tiles). For a generous zone that includes the user’s pulling position and some buffer, 12–15 tiles covers a complete powerlifting station at a cost of $94–$118 in Black. That’s meaningful protection for a targeted zone without tiling your whole room at 1/2" thickness.

Can I add 1/2" tiles to an existing 3/8" tile floor?

You can place them in the same space, but the two thicknesses won’t be flush — there’s a 3mm height difference between a 9mm and a 12mm tile. Most gym builders handle this by treating the high-impact zone as a slightly raised platform (common in dedicated deadlift areas) or by isolating the 1/2" tile zone with a clear boundary. The interlocking edges of 18” tiles in different thicknesses won’t connect directly.

Is the 1/2" 18x18 tile better than a 1/2" fixed mat for a deadlift zone?

Tiles give you more flexibility in coverage area and let you replace individual worn tiles. Fixed mats (4’ x 6’ or 4’ x 8’) have zero seams in the coverage area, which some lifters prefer. Same rubber, same protection — the choice comes down to whether you value seamless surface or modular flexibility.

Does the 5-year warranty apply to the 1/2" tiles?

Yes — our 5-year warranty covers all rubber flooring including the 1/2" (12mm) tiles, covering manufacturing defects in material and workmanship.
