Step 1: Remove Loose Debris
Before applying any cleaner, vacuum the rubber floor with a soft brush head to remove dust, dirt, and loose particles. A vacuum works better than a broom because it can pull debris out of the small pores in the rubber.
- Adjust the vacuum brush height so it doesn’t scratch or mark the surface.
- A light to medium setting is usually enough to lift debris without causing damage.
Step 2: Wash the Floor
Rubber flooring is best cleaned with a mop, but not all mop types work well:
- Avoid cotton string mops or low-quality sponge mops, as they can shed fibers.
- Use a microfiber mop head for the best results.
Mix a pH-neutral cleaner (such as Zep Concentrated Neutral pH Floor Cleaner) with warm water, following the product’s dilution instructions. Mop the floor with a damp—not soaking wet—mop.
⚠️ If using a foamy cleaner (like dish soap), rinse the floor afterward with clean water. Skipping this step can leave behind a film that makes the floor look dull and attracts more dirt.
Step 3: Dry the Floor
Let the floor air dry completely. To speed up the process:
- Open windows for better airflow.
- Use a box fan to circulate air.
- Wipe up excess water with a dry microfiber cloth or mop.

1/4" (6mm) Rubber Gym Tiles — 18” x 18” | Start Small, Scale Up
The most accessible way to start building a modular rubber floor. Our 1/4" (6mm) rubber gym tiles in 18” x 18” give you puzzle-style interlocking protection in the smallest tile format we carry — perfect for covering individual equipment zones, testing a layout before committing to a full floor, or building out a partial space one tile at a time without overspending on coverage you don’t need yet.
At just 2.38 square feet per tile, the 18” x 18” format is the right choice when you want flexible, modular placement and maximum control over exactly where protection goes. Made in the USA from recycled rubber, backed by a 5-year warranty, available in 4 colors, and sold by the tile so you only buy what you need.
Why the 18” x 18” Format Makes Sense for Light-Use Zones
- Maximum layout flexibility — smaller tiles fill irregular spaces, closets, alcoves, and odd-shaped rooms that larger 24” tiles can’t as cleanly
- Buy exactly what you need — at 2.38 sqft per tile, you can calculate precisely and buy to the tile without significant waste
- Starter installs and test coverage — cover a single treadmill, exercise bike, or yoga zone first; expand tile by tile as your space grows
- Easy single-tile replacement — if a tile gets damaged, you swap one 18” tile rather than a 24” section — less waste, lower replacement cost
- Lighter per-tile weight — each tile weighs approximately 3.4 lbs (Black), making solo installation genuinely easy
Where 1/4" (6mm) Rubber Tiles Belong
- Under cardio equipment — treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowers, and stair steppers where the goal is vibration dampening and floor protection, not impact absorption from heavy iron
- Yoga and stretching zones — the 6mm provides cushion for floor-based movement and gives you a defined mat-free practice area
- Under weight benches and cable machines in light training areas where the floor primarily needs protection from equipment legs and minor drops
- Basement and apartment gym floors over carpet, tile, or hardwood where a thin, light layer won’t raise the floor height significantly
- Pet and kennel areas — the rubber surface is easy to clean, slip-resistant, and comfortable for animals; the interlocking tiles allow drainage configuration
- Garage workshop zones where you want anti-fatigue coverage without a heavy permanent mat
- Kids’ play areas and activity rooms with light impact activity
How the Interlocking System Works
Each tile features puzzle-style interlocking edges on all four sides. Tiles connect without adhesive, tools, or underlayment — press them together and they hold in place. The interlocking system means:
- Tiles stay locked during normal use and movement
- You can expand the floor later by adding tiles to any edge
- Individual tiles lift out for cleaning or replacement without disturbing the rest
- You can reconfigure the layout if your equipment changes — no permanent commitment

Frequently Asked Questions
How many 18” x 18” tiles do I need for my space?
Each tile covers 2.38 square feet. Divide your total area by 2.38 and add 5–10% for edge cuts and waste. For example, a 10’ x 10’ space needs approximately 43 tiles (100 sqft ÷ 2.38 = 42.0, round up). Use our tile estimator: measure length × width in feet, divide by 2.38, add 5% overage.
Can I mix 18” and 24” tiles in the same floor?
No — the interlocking edges on 18” tiles are sized for 18” tiles and won’t connect with the 24” tile edge profile. However, you can butt the two formats up against each other as a border treatment or use them in separate zones of the same facility.
Is 1/4" thick enough for a treadmill?
Yes — for most home treadmills and ellipticals, 6mm provides adequate vibration damping and floor protection. If you have a commercial-grade treadmill exceeding 250 lbs or run at high speed for extended daily use, the 5/16" tile gives you an extra 2mm of cushion and durability. But for typical home cardio equipment, the 1/4" handles the job well.
Can these be used outdoors?
Yes — recycled rubber is UV-resistant and handles temperature variation well. For outdoor use, the loose-lay installation means water can flow under tiles; periodic cleaning is recommended. Heavy rainfall areas may benefit from using the tiles with slight spacing to allow drainage rather than fully interlocked.
What’s the price per square foot?
Black tiles run $1.55/sqft ($3.69 ÷ 2.38 sqft). Color tiles (Gray, Blue, Blue/Gray) are $1.95/sqft. If per-sqft economy is the priority for a full-room install, the 1/4" 24” x 24” tile brings the Black price down to $1.48/sqft and adds more color choices.
