Step 1: Remove Loose Debris

Before applying any cleaner, vacuum the rubber floor with a soft brush head to remove dust, dirt, and loose particles. A vacuum works better than a broom because it can pull debris out of the small pores in the rubber.

  • Adjust the vacuum brush height so it doesn’t scratch or mark the surface.
  • A light to medium setting is usually enough to lift debris without causing damage.

Step 2: Wash the Floor

Rubber flooring is best cleaned with a mop, but not all mop types work well:

  • Avoid cotton string mops or low-quality sponge mops, as they can shed fibers.
  • Use a microfiber mop head for the best results.

Mix a pH-neutral cleaner (such as Zep Concentrated Neutral pH Floor Cleaner) with warm water, following the product’s dilution instructions. Mop the floor with a damp—not soaking wet—mop.

⚠️ If using a foamy cleaner (like dish soap), rinse the floor afterward with clean water. Skipping this step can leave behind a film that makes the floor look dull and attracts more dirt.

Step 3: Dry the Floor

Let the floor air dry completely. To speed up the process:

  • Open windows for better airflow.
  • Use a box fan to circulate air.
  • Wipe up excess water with a dry microfiber cloth or mop.

5/16" (8mm) Rubber Gym Tiles — 18” x 18” | Modular Weight Training Protection for Partial Coverage & Irregular Spaces

The 5/16" (8mm) thickness is our go-to recommendation for weight training areas — it handles free weights, barbells, and gym equipment confidently. The 18” x 18” format takes that protection and puts it in the most flexible tile size we carry: small enough to fit irregular rooms, partial zones, and tight layouts with minimal cutting, while the puzzle-style interlocking edges let you start with one zone and build outward as your space and budget grow.

Made in the USA from recycled rubber, backed by a 5-year warranty, available in 4 colors, and sold by the tile so you buy exactly what you need.

When the 18” Format Is the Right Tile Size

  • Irregular rooms and L-shaped spaces — smaller tiles require less cutting waste when working around corners, columns, and equipment anchors
  • Start-small gym builds — buy tiles for the squat rack zone today, add tiles under the bench and dumbbell area next month; each 18” tile is one incremental step
  • Precise equipment footprints — at 2.38 sqft/tile, you can cover a squat rack base to the square foot without the overage that comes with larger 4 sqft tiles
  • Easy repair and replacement — a dented or worn tile is a $5.36 replacement per tile, not a full-mat swap
  • Mixed-use rooms where only part of the floor needs weight training protection; tile precisely the zones that need it

Where 5/16" (8mm) Rubber Tiles Belong

  • Under squat racks and power rack bases — the 8mm handles equipment weight and minor barbell drops from controlled working sets
  • Dumbbell and free weight stations — protects floors from dumbbell drops and rolling, gives athletes a defined zone to work in
  • Under cable machines and functional trainers — provides subfloor protection from weighted attachment drops and equipment feet
  • Barbell work zones where the bar touches the floor with control between reps (Romanian deadlifts, barbell rows); for intentional drops, step up to 1/2" tiles
  • CrossFit and functional fitness areas with kettlebells, box jumps, and mixed-implement training
  • Horse stable and equine facility flooring — the 8mm thickness provides excellent hoof and joint cushion; the 18” format handles stall corners and irregular layouts cleanly
  • Dog kennel and pet facility flooring — easy-clean rubber with interlocking edges that allow drainage spacing if needed
  • Outdoor gym areas and rooftop training spaces — recycled rubber handles UV and temperature variation well

How the Interlocking System Works

Each tile features puzzle-style interlocking edges on all four sides. Tiles connect without adhesive, tools, or underlayment. The loose-lay system means:

  • No permanent commitment — the floor is fully reversible if you move or reconfigure
  • Expand at any time by adding tiles to any open edge of the existing floor
  • Lift out individual tiles for deep cleaning under equipment or to replace a damaged piece
  • Work in any direction — the interlocking design is symmetric on all four sides

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 18” tiles do I need under a squat rack?

A standard home power rack typically has a base footprint of about 4’ x 4’ (16 sqft). That’s approximately 7 tiles. Add tiles in front for the barbell zone where you stand and where the bar may contact the floor — extend coverage another 2’ forward for a total of roughly 4’ x 6’ (10 tiles). For a full rack station with generous barbell coverage, budget 12–15 tiles.

Can I use 5/16" tiles for Olympic lifting?

For training with controlled bar contact, yes. For intentional overhead drops or maximal-effort lifts where the bar hits the floor hard, the 1/2" (12mm) tile provides meaningfully better shock absorption and subfloor protection. The 5/16" is rated for weight training use; it’s the 1/2" that’s built for impact.

Why choose 18” over 24” at the same thickness?

The 18” tile wins when you have irregular spaces to fill, want to minimize waste in rooms with lots of cuts, or are building out a space zone-by-zone rather than all at once. The 24” tile is faster to install in open rectangular rooms and brings the per-sqft price down slightly — plus it adds Eggshell/Cocoa and Terra Cotta to the color palette. Match the tile size to your space, not the other way around.

How do I cut tiles to fit edges and corners?

A utility knife with a fresh blade and a straight-edge works well for straight cuts. Score the surface with a few firm passes, then snap. For curved cuts (around posts or outlets), a jigsaw with a rubber-cutting blade gives the cleanest result. Always measure twice; rubber doesn’t have much forgiveness for error.

Is the 5-year warranty the same as the mat and roll products?

Yes — our 5-year warranty covers all rubber flooring including the 5/16" (8mm) tiles, covering manufacturing defects in material and workmanship.
