12mm Rubber Underlayment — Maximum Cushion for Commercial Spaces & Synthetic Turf
The heaviest-duty underlayment in our lineup. Our 12mm rubber underlayment is built for commercial environments where floors face constant foot traffic, heavy loads, and demanding sound requirements — and for synthetic turf applications where the underlayment’s unique compaction characteristics determine how the turf performs and feels underfoot.
At nearly half an inch thick and 2.19 lbs/sqft, the 12mm delivers maximum sound absorption, maximum cushion, and the installation flexibility that commercial projects require: adhesive, staples, nails, double-sided carpet tape, or free-floating assembly. Whatever your subfloor, whatever your installation method, the 12mm handles it. Made in the USA, backed by a 5-year warranty.
What 12mm Does That Thinner Underlayments Can’t
- Maximum sound dampening for commercial environments — the 12mm mass absorbs impact sound and airborne noise more aggressively than thinner options; designed for facilities where foot traffic noise, equipment vibration, and structural sound transmission are commercial-level concerns
- Purpose-built for synthetic and artificial turf — the 12mm’s compaction characteristics make it the preferred underlayment for synthetic turf installations; it provides the right amount of give and recovery to make turf feel and perform like natural grass without bottoming out underfoot
- Multiple installation methods — unlike thinner underlayments limited to loose-lay or tape, the 12mm can be installed using adhesive (glue-down), staples, nails, or double-sided carpet tape; this versatility makes it compatible with nearly any commercial flooring installation protocol
- Stable under heavy loads — at this thickness and density, the 12mm handles commercial equipment, high-traffic corridors, furniture on casters, and heavy use without compressing or bottoming out over time
- Water-resistant and mold-resistant — rubber at any thickness doesn’t absorb or retain water; the 12mm is suitable for areas where moisture is present, including at-grade and outdoor covered installations
- Free-floating assembly compatible — for installations that need to be removable or reconfigurable, the 12mm can be loose-laid and held in place by the weight of the flooring above
Where 12mm Rubber Underlayment Gets Used
- Commercial fitness facilities and weight rooms where the subfloor needs maximum cushion and sound isolation below the primary gym flooring
- Synthetic turf installations — indoor and outdoor; the 12mm provides the cushion and compaction profile that makes artificial grass installations feel premium and perform durably
- School gyms and multipurpose rooms with high daily foot traffic and institutional sound requirements
- Commercial office and retail spaces where hard surface flooring over concrete needs maximum sound isolation for tenant comfort and code compliance
- Hotels and hospitality spaces where impact sound isolation between floors is a priority for guest experience
- Community centers and recreation facilities with mixed-use flooring systems and commercial-grade durability requirements
- Event spaces and trade show environments where temporary flooring systems need a substantial cushioned base that can be installed and removed repeatedly

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 12mm rubber underlayment the right choice for synthetic turf?
Yes — the 12mm is specifically referenced for synthetic turf applications because its compaction characteristics match what turf installations need. It provides enough cushion to make the turf feel soft underfoot while recovering after compression so the turf performs consistently over time. For indoor turf in training facilities or outdoor covered spaces, the 12mm is the standard underlayment choice.
Can I glue down the 12mm underlayment?
Yes — unlike thinner underlayments that are typically limited to loose-lay or tape, the 12mm supports full adhesive installation. Use a compatible floor adhesive spread with a V-notch trowel, press the underlayment into the adhesive, and allow to cure before installing flooring above. Staple and nail installation are also supported for wood subfloor applications.
How does 12mm rubber compare to 12mm cork underlayment for sound?
They perform similarly in the 12mm format for sound absorption. The key difference is longevity: cork can compress and crumble over time, especially in high-traffic commercial environments; rubber maintains its density and acoustic properties for the life of the installation. For commercial applications where long-term performance matters, rubber is the more reliable choice.
Is the 12mm suitable for below-grade basement installations?
For below-grade applications, the 12mm’s water resistance is an asset — rubber won’t absorb ground moisture. However, in basements with known moisture intrusion or slab moisture vapor transmission, a 6-mil poly vapor barrier under the underlayment is still recommended before installing finished flooring above. Always verify your flooring manufacturer’s warranty requirements for below-grade applications.
