3mm Rubber Underlayment — The Everyday Hard-Surface Base for Laminate, LVP & Modular Tiles
The most versatile thickness in our underlayment lineup. Our 3mm rubber underlayment hits the sweet spot for hard surface flooring installations — thick enough to deliver meaningful sound reduction and subfloor cushion, thin enough to work cleanly under laminate, luxury vinyl plank, hardwood, ceramic tile, and modular flooring systems without creating transition or height issues.
At 0.64 lbs/sqft with a built-in antimicrobial agent that inhibits mold and mildew growth, this underlayment is built for real-world floors that see moisture, foot traffic, and daily use. Made in the USA, backed by a 5-year warranty, available in 4’ x 25’ and 4’ x 50’ rolls.
What Makes 3mm the Right Call for Hard Surface Floors
- Superior sound absorption — 3mm of dense rubber significantly reduces impact noise (footsteps, dropped items, chair movement) traveling through hard surface floors to rooms below
- Durable and firm — rubber’s natural rigidity resists compression from heavy furniture, appliances, and high foot traffic; it won’t flatten out or lose performance over time the way foam underlayments do
- Antimicrobial treatment — an added antimicrobial agent inhibits the growth of mold and mildew, keeping the underlayment fresh in environments where moisture and humidity are present
- Water-resistant by nature — rubber doesn’t absorb or retain water; this eliminates the need for a separate vapor barrier in many installations (always verify with your flooring manufacturer’s warranty requirements)
- Works under modular and interlocking tiles — the 3mm profile and firm surface make it a clean match under Grid-Loc, modular rubber tiles, and similar interlocking flooring systems, effectively reducing noise transmitted through the tile joints
- Flexible installation — loose-lay over concrete or wood subfloors for floating installations; tape to subfloor for permanent setups; no adhesive required
Where 3mm Rubber Underlayment Gets Used
- Under laminate flooring — the most common underlayment application; 3mm rubber outperforms foam in durability and sound reduction without the moisture concerns
- Under luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) — provides the stable, non-compressible base that LVP needs to perform and feel solid underfoot
- Under engineered hardwood and floating hardwood floors — sound dampening and subfloor imperfection bridging in a thin, manageable profile
- Under ceramic and porcelain tile in renovation applications where the subfloor needs a sound-dampening layer without significant height gain
- Under modular and interlocking tile systems including rubber gym tiles, plastic garage tiles, and grid-style flooring where tile-to-tile noise needs to be reduced
- Basement installations over concrete where moisture resistance and sound isolation are both priorities
- Apartments and condos with HOA or building requirements for impact sound insulation under hard surface floors

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 3mm rubber underlayment replace a vapor barrier?
In many cases, yes — rubber naturally resists moisture and doesn’t retain water, which is why a separate vapor barrier is often unnecessary. That said, always check your flooring manufacturer’s warranty requirements before skipping a vapor barrier. Some manufacturers require one regardless of underlayment type. In water-prone areas (bathrooms, below-grade basements), a vapor barrier is still recommended even with rubber underlayment.
Can I use 3mm underlayment under rubber gym mats or tiles?
Yes — particularly for reducing noise transmission through interlocking tile joints and providing a cushioned base over hard concrete. The 3mm works well under rubber gym tiles in basement or above-grade gym spaces. If the primary concern is impact absorption and anti-fatigue from training rather than sound reduction, the 5mm gives you more performance.
How do I install it — do I need adhesive?
No adhesive required. For floating floor installations (laminate, LVP, engineered hardwood), simply unroll the underlayment across the subfloor and butt the edges together; the flooring above holds everything in place. For permanent installations, double-sided tape at seams and perimeter is sufficient. For tile systems over the underlayment, the tile weight secures it.
How much does one roll cover?
The 4’ x 25’ roll covers 100 square feet at $48 total ($0.48/sqft). The 4’ x 50’ roll covers 200 square feet at $96. For rooms larger than 200 square feet, order multiple rolls and stagger the seams for best performance. Add 5–10% overage for edge cuts and waste.
